Round 8 saw the Unicorns hit the road again, this time facing another formidable challenge in Whitefriars. On the last weekend of autumn, under a clear, sunny sky, MHSOBFC was determined to learn from their disappointing loss last week and turn their fortunes around.
The first quarter kicked off as expected, a physical contest with both teams slipping momentum over the 30-minute quarter. With no weather advantages, it was clear the game would come down to sheer persistence. Scores showed MHSOBFC 3.5 (23), Whitefriars 2.5 (17) at the end of the first. As the second quarter began, the midfield battle shifted. Whitefriars' ruckman consistently provided first touch, propelling the ball towards their attacking end. However, the MHSOB backline stood strong under pressure, allowing the Unicorns to fight for momentum and keep the game tight. At halftime, Whitefriars held a narrow lead: 6.6 (42) to MHSOBFC's 4.10 (34).
Belief was high in the third quarter. The Unicorns knew that if they continued to be first to the ball and applied relentless pressure on Whitefriars, they would be rewarded. The tide began to turn in MHSOB's favor, and they regained control, heading into the fourth quarter with a four-point lead. In the final quarter, any unbiased observer would have called the game a toss-up. However, the Unicorns dominated the last term. While converting opportunities upfront remained a challenge, MHSOBFC's unwavering determination to maintain general play momentum made it incredibly difficult for Whitefriars to mount a comeback, resulting in a 20-point win.
After a tough loss in Round 7, implementing simple training strategies throughout the week and executing them against an undefeated opponent was a significant achievement. MHSOBFC will undoubtedly look to build on this crucial win and demonstrate to the competition that they are a genuine threat come September.
Several Unicorns delivered noteworthy performances. Liam Littore put his body on the line at every contest and was rewarded with being one of the leading disposal-getters for the day, along with a goal. Allister Clarke delivered another excellent game through the midfield, while Will Hellier proved his exceptional athleticism is a nightmare for any opponent. Mitch Wilson showed his experience off the half-back line, consistently stopping momentum and slingshotting the ball forward. Last but not least, fan favorite Yonal Gunawardena, despite being the youngest and lightest player on the field, played with class and fearlessness against a very physical opposition.

Goals: Mathew Pereira 3, Jamie Radcliffe-Smith 2, Liam Littore, Allister Clarke, Nick McKinnon, James Lees, Yonal Gunawardena, Will Hellier.
