R6 2025 | Dev Squad vs UHS-VU

It was a sensational weekend to be a JnrCorn, as the boys delivered a commanding win over Preston last weekend—an emphatic 121-point victory that well and truly stamped us as a team to watch this season. With strong numbers on the track during the week and a focus on correcting second-half lapses, the lads came out ready to make a statement—and they did just that. But this round was about more than just footy. As part of a home triple-header, we proudly hosted our first-ever Family & Domestic Violence Awareness Round. The week featured a powerful Thursday night education session, and on game day, the boys ran out in orange socks—a strong symbol of support and a reminder that footy can be a platform for real change.

With the Unicorn faithful in full voice and the seniors and reserves arriving early to support, the JnrCorns burst out of the blocks with one of the most dominant opening quarters in recent memory. We slammed home 7.7 to 0.0, building a 45-point lead in just 25 minutes. Henry Lake, Ben Tyrrell, and Kavish Tailor led the engine room charge, feasting on the silver service provided by second-gamer Oscar Payne, who tapped it down like a seasoned veteran. Our backline held an impenetrable wall, not allowing UHS to cross halfway, while wingers Hamish Webb and Bailey Gallop drove the ball forward with poise and pace. There were highlights everywhere. Mohammed Elfaki opened his account with a genuine Goal of the Year contender before celebrating with a passionate salute to the Yarra River crowd. Ben Sharrock set the tone early with some crunching contests, and Lachie Sharrock wasn’t far behind, throwing himself into every battle.

At quarter time, the message from coach Kevin was crystal clear: don’t lift your foot off the pedal. The boys responded in style, kicking another 10 goals in a rain-soaked second term. Despite the wet, the ball movement was elite—slick, sharp, and unrelenting. Henry Lake capped off his half with a booming 60-metre goal, while Matt Haberfield and Aaron Shipperlee were unstoppable, racking up possessions and scoreboard impact. The halftime siren sounded with the JnrCorns up by a staggering 106 points, and the rooms were electric (perhaps too electric), reminding the group there was still a job to do.

The rain continued into the third, slowing the game down but not the effort. Ben and Lachie Sharrock combined for a massive 11 goals on the day—Ben thriving at full forward with his physical presence and Lachie creating chaos with smart running and clean hands. Down back, Asher Claney, Cal Hackman, and Riley O’Halloran were in full control, repelling every push forward. UHS-VU managed to snag two goals late, but the damage was already done. Three-quarter time: 160–19. With the game sewn up, Kevin shifted the message to fun. The board flipped—forwards became backs, and backs became forwards, and the team embraced the moment. Sam Tralagaan kicked off the final term with a precise finish from 40 out. Austin Reynolds slotted a silky major of his own, and recruit Lachie Lane made his mark, slotting a goal and running a lap around the boundary to high-five the coach, drawing a huge reaction from teammates and supporters alike. The final siren brought the curtain down on a comprehensive performance, with the final score an eye-popping 210–20.

Celebrations in the rooms were loud, proud, and an improvement on last week’s rendition of the song, with the tunes and energy flowing freely.

While it was a day of many positives, it wasn’t without setbacks. Ex-RJFC product Zac Razmoski suffered a dislocated elbow in the first quarter, and former Bulleen Temp recruit Blake Itiliano was ruled out with a concussion. We send our best wishes to both boys for a speedy recovery—your contributions didn’t go unnoticed.

Now sitting 4–2 and on top of the ladder, the JnrCorns are building something special. With belief growing and momentum on our side, the challenge now is to make it three wins in a row and defend our spot at the summit next week.
